• How does pressure washer work?

     

    A pressure washer is a great tool to clean mud, dust, paint from floors, vehicle or any concrete surface with the help of pressurized water spray.But you might be curious that how does this pressure washer work and what goes behind making this wonderful device which makes the job of cleaning so much easier. In this article, I will explain the mechanism and principle on which a pressure washer works.

    Parts of a pressure washer and their working -

     

    The pressure washer has two main components which are

    • Power Source- This can be an electric motor or a gasoline engine.

    • Pump- The pump can be an axial pump or a triplex pump.

     

    These two are the main components on which the functioning of a pressure washer depends. Along with these, there are other smaller parts also.

    Water Inlet-

     

    This is the inlet through which water enters the pressure washer. It is a hose that connects the pressure water to the main water supply. It also has a filter to make sure that dirt and debris don’t enter the pressure washer to affect the smooth functioning of the pressure washer.

    Electric Motor or Gas Engine-

     

    Most pressure washer uses a four-cycle engine to drive the pump similar to an automobile engine. They run on gasoline. Before starting the engine, the switch setting should be on ‘On’. After that starter rope is pulled in most models. When the starter rope is pulled it engages the drive cup on the flywheel and rotates the crankshaft. The crankshaft connects to the piston which moves up and down in the cylinder. There are four strokes made by the piston- Intake, compression, power, and exhaust which ignites the engine. The engine then powers the pump.

    Water pump-

     

    The engine crankshaft extends out to the bottom or side of the crankcase and connects to the pump. The pump consists of three plungers which operate in a similar manner to a piston. As the plungers move upward, they draw water from the input check valve. And as they move downward, the water is forced through the output check valve.

    High-Pressure Hose-

    It is the small pipe through which the water flows with high pressure. They are covered with wire mesh and high-density layers of plastic so that they can survive the high pressure of the water. This hose is then further connected to the trigger gun. Smaller the diameter of the hosepipe, the greater will be the pressure.

    Cleaning Agent-

     

    Usually it is the trigger gun, but it may vary according to your needs. It can also be a spinning wand spray or a rotating brush to scrub your drive.

    Trigger gun makes cleaning a very simple and easy task. When the trigger on the gun is held, the pressurized water exiting the pump flows through the hose and wand to the noddle which creates the high-pressure stream.

  • When the trigger is released, the water flow stops and the unloader detects the increased pressure and a spring-loaded valve opens a passage in the pump back to the inlet valve. This process allows the engine to operate when the pressure washer is not in use. Although this process heats up the water which is removed through the release valve.
